Goodwill-Dell Partnership Enters Third Year of Free Computer Recycling

Saturday, February 20, marked the second anniversary of Reconnect, Goodwill’s free drop-off program to recycle unwanted computer hardware. Launched in 2008 by Dell and Goodwill Industries of Northwest Ohio, Reconnect has kept 1,066,743 pounds of used computers and computer equipment out of landfills. That’s 533 tons of recycled material!

Reconnect serves people throughout Northwest Ohio by leveraging Dell’s resources and global recycling experience and the donation and retail infrastructure of Goodwill. The program helps protect the environment through responsible recycling or reuse of computer equipment and provides residents a convenient way to support Goodwill Industries of Northwest Ohio.

Since its inception, the program’s goal has been twofold: to divert tons of used computers from area landfills and to provide consumer education on the importance of environmentally responsible computer disposal. Reconnect also helps create job opportunities for individuals with disabilities and other employment barriers.wp8ef28eab.jpg

Northwest Ohio was one of only a handful of Goodwill Industries participating in the program two years ago. Now Reconnect is rapidly becoming a nationwide partnership between Dell and Goodwill Industries International. Nationally, similar programs are underway in 30 states and at 97 local Goodwills. Consumers can now drop off computers for recycling at more than 1,900 Goodwill locations nationwide.

Residents throughout Northwest Ohio can visit www.goodwillnwohio.com to locate the most convenient drop off at any of our 16 Goodwill retail stores and donation centers. Goodwill accepts and sorts the donated computer
equipment and Dell’s product recovery partner recycles and re-markets the recycled materials, such as plastics, glass and metals. All proceeds support Goodwill’s non-profit
training and employment programs.

Since 1933, Goodwill Industries of Northwest Ohio has provided employment and job training
to individuals with disabilities and/or work-related disadvantages. Strong families and communities
are a result of individuals who have gained economic independence and become a contributing
member of the community.
