Goodwill Celebrates Its First Decade of Online Auctioneering
Shopgoodwill.com, Goodwill’s Internet Charity Auction Site, Turns 10
Toledo, Ohio – shopgoodwill.com, the nation’s first and only nonprofit Internet auction site, is celebrating its 10 years in existence and proving that Goodwill Industries is not only a leader in job placement, but also innovative social enterprise through its use of technology.
Shopgoodwill.com was launched nationally in January, 2000, with Goodwill Industries of Northwest Ohio joining the site in April of 2000. Since that time, Goodwill of Northwest Ohio has sold 190,515 items on the site generating $2,550,000 in revenue for its mission of providing job training programs and employment placement services.
“The auction items all come from one source with a respected brand name – Goodwill Industries. Security procedures make the site a safe place to bid and buy – it’s like buying something from someone you know,” said Bob Huber, President and CEO of Goodwill Industries of Northwest Ohio. “The revenues, as with our stores, benefit Goodwill Industries, and because it goes into job training and other support services for people with barriers to employment, shoppers feel good about their purchases.”
There is no fee to sign up or bid on items. Stock comes through Goodwill’s mainstream donations. When Goodwill staff sees value, antiques and collectibles, the items are sent to our Shopgoodwill.com department to be posted, thereby providing a method to optimize the value of donations. Items on the site are not just collected from Northwest Ohio, but from 165 other independent Goodwill agencies across North America. More that 30,000 items are for sale at any given time.
Shopgoodwill.com ranked as one of TopTenREVIEWS Top 10 online auction sites and Time.com’s "50 Best Websites of 2009."
With more that a million page views per day, shopgoodwill.com is an Internet auction site that successfully coexists and functions with the big-name online auctioneers by its 165 categories and subcategories,” said Huber.
Besides its 11 retail outlets and Shopgoodwill.com, Goodwill Industries of Northwest Ohio has other unique shopping outlets; the Goodwill Auto Auction and Goodwill’s Findlay Boutique.

Goodwill Providing Work Experience for Youth with Autism
For the last several months, each week students from the Autism Model School have come to Goodwill’s regional training center to receive hands-on work experience with the organization’s retail department.
Six youth, ages 14 – 20, work in the processing room for Goodwill’s Cherry street store assisting in the sorting of donations for sale. Working together with four job coaches, they make sure donated hard goods aren’t broken and that clothes are in good shape.
The goal of the program is to provide youth with autism with meaningful work experience which can assist them in finding supported or competitive employment upon graduation from school.
According to Becky Knapp, a job training coordinator with the Autism Model School, “We’re really grateful that students can get meaningful experience outside the school. “It gives them the chance to meet new people and experience the whole social aspect of having a job.”
In time, Knapp says she’s hoping more classes from the school will take advantage of the opportunity of working with Goodwill, and that work experience opportunities might include even greater tasks such as custodial experiences.
