Mission Moment: Meet Christie

Meet Christie! Christie has been a client at the Job Connection Center (JCC) since 2019. Since then, she has made many strides. When Christie first came to us, she was at Ohio Link and using the JCC computer lab for her online college classes. She is now enrolled in our Northwest Ohio Manufacturing Alliance program (NOMA), working two part-time jobs, and has a place of her own. Congratulations, Christie, on the progress you have made!

Bus Passes Now Available for Purchase at Toledo Area Goodwill Store Locations

Toledo, Ohio – January 5, 2024 – Toledo Area Regional Transit Authority (TARTA) customers will be able to add four places to purchase passes at Goodwill Industries of Northwest Ohio’s Greater Toledo retail locations.  

1-Day and 7-Day passes for fixed-route vehicles will be available for purchase with cash, credit, or debit, at the following Goodwill locations:

3249 Navarre Avenue, Oregon

2600 W. Sylvania Avenue, Toledo

3550 Executive Parkway, Toledo

2021 S. Reynolds Road, Toledo

Each location is open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday. Effective January 7th, the Goodwill location in Oregon on Navarre Ave. will be the site of one of TARTA’s fixed-route stops.

“Reliable transportation is one of the largest barriers to employment. Goodwill is excited to partner with TARTA; it’s a perfect fit for Goodwill’s mission and the individuals we serve” said Amy Wachob, President/CEO Goodwill of Northwest Ohio.

Mission Moment: Meet Stephanie

Stephanie came to us after recently released from incarceration. Since her release, Stephanie was able to hit the ground running. She was eager to gain employment when she first came to Goodwill and with Goodwill’s help was able to obtain employment quickly. Goodwill Industries was able to assist her with some quality work shoes, per her request. Stephanie continues to maintain employment since shortly after her release and is thankful to Goodwill for the support. Keep up the good work Stephanie, Goodwill is extremely proud of you!

Mission Moment: Partnerships

Meet Mr. Robert Bass, Director, Business and Program Development at Owens Community College. Mr. Bass has collaborated with Goodwill Reentry Program and clients enrolled in welding classes.  Owens provides the welding training and certification and Goodwill provides the students with work ready development services along with work boots for graduates of the program.  Mr. Bass and Goodwill Reentry Program Manager, Christopher Fincher were able to provide certification and work boots to eight program graduates.  Thank you for the partnership Mr. Bass!

Mission Moment: Meet Bryona

Bryona has been working with Goodwill since June of 2023. The process was slow moving at first due to unforeseen circumstances but through it all, Bryona maintained that she wanted to keep working toward her goals. She states, “I am proud of myself for sticking with my job search even when it’s been hard.” At the start of her journey, she was unsure of herself and her abilities. After completing job seeking skills training with her Job Developer, she is coordinating interviews, maintaining a consistent meeting schedule, and scheduling her TARPS rides independently – all things she hadn’t done previously.  She expressed that she’s gained a lot of skills since working with Goodwill and “it’s a lot better than doing it on my own.” We are proud of you, Bryona!

Mission Moment: Meet Sammie

Sam came to Goodwill looking for help with finding a better paying job to help him provide for his six children and had several barriers including reinstatement fees preventing him from accomplishing that goal. Reentry Navigator Christopher Fincher started working with Sam right away knocking down barriers and was able to help Sam find gainful employment.  Sam now credits Goodwill for helping him provide for his family and looks forward to when he can give back to the community for support he received.  Congrats to both Sam and Christopher on job well done!

President and CEO of Goodwill Industries of NW Ohio, Inc. (and Owens alum), Amy Wachob sits down with Owens Community College President Dr. Dione D. Somerville talk about her time at Owens, growing in leadership skills and how Goodwill Industries helps the northwest Ohio community!

Amy began working at Goodwill in 1991 at the Reynolds Rd. Goodwill retail store location. She talks about her journey from the beginning of her PT Head Cashier position, how Goodwill Industries mission fueled her desire to get more education and to move up in the organization and her desire to help individuals break barriers to employment, throughout NW Ohio.

Goodwill Employee’s receive Certified Employment Support Professional Credentials

Goodwill Mission Services would like to congratulate Lisa Broseke and Yusuf Gardner for passing their respective Certified Employment Support Professional Credential (CESP) Test.  The CESP credential is designed for job coaches, job developers, transition employment specialists, job placement personnel, and employment specialists/consultants who serve a wide variety of target audiences including individuals with intellectual/developmental disabilities, mental health diagnoses, sensory impairments, physical disabilities, traumatic brain injury, and autism spectrum disorders. CMO, David Takats said, “I feel the certification adds a level of professionalism for our staff. It shows a higher level of understanding and education for Opportunities for Ohioans with Disabilities (OOD), consumers and employers. It lets them know Goodwill’s employment staff has a broad knowledge needed to be successful in this field.” We are extremely proud of both of their efforts.  Congratulations Lisa and Yusuf!

Individuals who earn the CESP credential have demonstrated knowledge of the facilitation and advocacy skills necessary to help establish and expand equitable employment opportunities for individuals with disabilities. CESPs also raise awareness of benefits within the business community, and promote social change that fosters an independent, productive lifestyle for individuals with disabilities.

Welcome Alexandria!

Welcome Alexandria as Goodwill’s newest Community Employment Specialist.  Alexandria has been a communication professional for the past five years. While specializing in commercial photography at Bowling Green State University, she focused her studies on consumer behavior and market research. Upon understanding needs for economic development, she facilitated workshops and programs for consideration in business and career exploration. Alexandria looks forward to furthering her experience in community development with Goodwill and empowering individuals through their connection to employment and the Power of Work!
